Pine Island - Sams House
Phase I and II Renovations
Pine Island Conservation Area
Merritt Island, Florida
-
This project was completed for Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department and entailed the complete restoration of the oldest standing house in Brevard County, Florida, including a cabin built in 1875. The original cabin was built in Eau Gallie, but then rafted down the Indian River Lagoon in 1878 to it’s current location on North Merritt Island. The two-story house was constructed in 1888.
Restoration utilized materials salvaged from builds in the same era as the original house. Antique hardware and Merritt Island Pine hardwood was located and used for the flooring. One hundred-year-old cabin wood was purchased to replace the deteriorating siding, and tin roof material was installed. A new electrical system, fire protection system, HVAC and plumbing, along with telephone and cable wiring were installed.
Linseed oil was used as a wood preservative on the exterior of the cabin. Site work included retention ponds, potable water system, fire hydrant and a new septic system.
